TOP INSIGHTS

A weekly roundup of Waymo One's key feedback

1

Inaccurate Wait Times

Many users report that the estimated wait times for rides are often inaccurate, with some experiencing significant delays beyond the initial estimate. Approximately 10% of users seem to be affected by this issue, leading to frustration and inconvenience.

The app initially showed a 9-minute wait, but it extended to 55 minutes, leaving me stranded.

2

High Pricing

A notable number of users find Waymo's pricing to be higher than expected, especially when compared to competitors like Uber and Lyft. This issue affects around 8% of users, who feel the cost is not justified given the service's autonomous nature.

I was shocked to pay $35 for a 5-mile ride, which is more expensive than Uber or Lyft.

3

App Functionality Issues

Some users experience technical difficulties with the app, such as login problems and incorrect location tracking, which hinder their ability to use the service effectively. Approximately 5% of users report these issues, leading to a negative experience.

I couldn't log in to the app, and it kept looping back to the sign-in page.

4

Limited Service Area

Users express frustration with the limited service area, which restricts their ability to use Waymo for all their transportation needs. This affects about 7% of users, who find the service area too small or inconsistent with advertised coverage.

Despite living near the Google office, I'm out of the service area and can't use Waymo.

Major Highlights of the Week

Inaccurate Wait Times
Users experience significant discrepancies between estimated and actual wait times, leading to frustration and inconvenience. This inconsistency undermines trust in the app's reliability and can result in missed appointments or events.
I was told 7 minutes for pickup, but it ended up being 27 minutes.
Pickup/Drop-off Issues
The app often directs users to inconvenient or incorrect pickup and drop-off locations, causing delays and additional walking. This can be particularly problematic for users with mobility issues or those in a hurry.
I had to walk 16 minutes to the pickup point, which defeated the purpose of using the service.
Service Area Limitations
The restricted service area frustrates users who find themselves just outside the coverage zone, limiting the app's utility. This limitation is especially disappointing for users who see Waymo vehicles frequently but cannot access the service.
I live near the Google office but am out of the service area, which is frustrating.
Pricing Concerns
Users are dissatisfied with the pricing structure, finding it more expensive than competitors like Uber and Lyft, despite the lack of a human driver. This perception of poor value can deter potential users from choosing Waymo.
Account and Login Issues
Users face difficulties with account setup and login, including endless loops and verification failures, preventing them from accessing the service. These technical barriers can lead to user attrition and negative brand perception.
I can't log in to the app; it keeps looping back to the start page.
Customer Support Challenges
Users report unhelpful and unprofessional customer support experiences, with representatives providing inadequate solutions. This lack of effective support can exacerbate user frustration and damage the brand's reputation.
Support was unhelpful and laughed at my issue instead of resolving it.

The estimates above 5m are inaccurate. I booked a ride on Friday evening that had a 7m wait time. It was 'arriving' for about 10m. Despite there being a line of Waymo’s waiting at the intersection. It’s also buggy. On that same ride, I got in, and then promptly was told to exit the vehicle because the last ride wasn’t completed. I booked an Uber that came in 1m. Don’t rely on Waymo unless you are ready to wait and aren’t on a busy street. Horrible app.

Absolutely phenomenal app and use Waymo lots but the app is extremely spammy with notifications. Would absolutely give 5 stars otherwise.

I had a terrible experience with Waymo today. I couldn’t board twice—once because the car was across the street with no time to reach it safely, and the other time I couldn't find the car at all. Waymo really needs to improve its pickup accuracy. To make things worse, I was charged $5 each time for a failure-to-board fee. Unacceptable!
