A weekly roundup of Ultimate Guitar: Chords & Tabs's key feedback

1

Subscription Frustration

Many users are frustrated with the app's aggressive push towards paid subscriptions, with features that were once free now locked behind a paywall. Approximately 30% of users express dissatisfaction with the app's monetization strategy, feeling that it prioritizes profit over user experience.

I can't even transpose a song without being forced to pay for a subscription, which used to be free.

2

Customer Support Issues

Users frequently report difficulties in reaching customer support and resolving issues, such as subscription cancellations and app functionality problems. Around 20% of users mention poor customer service experiences, leading to frustration and dissatisfaction.

I can't cancel my subscription and customer support is unresponsive, leaving me stuck with charges I didn't authorize.

3

Intrusive Ads and Pop-ups

The app is criticized for its intrusive ads and pop-ups, even for paying subscribers, which disrupt the user experience. Approximately 25% of users are annoyed by the constant upselling and mandatory surveys that hinder access to the app's core features.

Every time I open the app, I'm bombarded with ads and surveys, making it hard to just get to my tabs.

4

App Performance and Bugs

Users report frequent crashes, slow loading times, and other technical issues that make the app difficult to use. About 15% of users experience these performance problems, which significantly impact their ability to enjoy the app's features.

The app crashes constantly, and I can't even complete a lesson without it freezing.

Major Highlights of the Week

Subscription Confusion
Users are frustrated with unexpected charges and difficulty canceling subscriptions, leading to accusations of deceptive practices. This confusion is exacerbated by unclear trial terms and auto-renewal policies.
I signed up for a free trial and was charged $69.99 immediately without any warning.
Intrusive Onboarding
The app forces users through unskippable surveys and promotional screens upon opening, disrupting the user experience and causing frustration. This aggressive upselling approach is seen as a barrier to accessing core features.
Every time I open the app, I'm forced to answer questions and go through ads before I can use it.
Feature Paywalls
Basic functionalities like transposing and auto-scrolling, previously free, are now locked behind a paywall, leading to dissatisfaction among long-time users. This shift is perceived as a monetization strategy at the expense of user experience.
I can't even transpose a song without paying for a subscription, which used to be free.
App Stability Issues
Frequent crashes and performance issues, especially during video lessons, hinder the learning experience and lead to user dissatisfaction. These technical problems are not being addressed promptly, affecting the app's reliability.
The app crashes every time I try to watch a course video, making it unusable.

Quotes of the week

Hear from some of the most impactful users to drive changes

I've been using this app for years, and lately, they've become downright annoying. The purpose of the app is to get tabs you can practice with to learn songs on your instrument of choice. Now, they bombard you with questions about how good you are and how you like to play, etc. so they can push their AI tools and subscription services, and you CAN'T OPT OUT OF THE QUESTIONS. I don't want your stupid AI tools or services. I only want the tabs I've saved. LEAVE ME ALONE ALREADY!

I used to LOVE Ultimate Guitar back when you started out! Now you can't even transpose without a subscription?! Really?!?!?! Now I just do it mentally and forego the monthly amount. I'll rather go to the artist's page. You're losing potential users just because you want to have people pay for a 'basic' functionality. It's literally a part of code that is just activated or deactivated, depending on subscription status. For someone who's missed just jumping in & playing, you've just spoilt it.

I have been having so many issues lately with the app not working and having loading issues. To me, it was a great app I used a lot, a few years ago.
