TOP INSIGHTS

A weekly roundup of DuckDuckGo Browser, Search, AI's key feedback

1

Limited Search Results

Some users report that DuckDuckGo's search engine omits safe and relevant sites, forcing them to switch to other browsers for comprehensive results. Approximately 10% of users seem affected by this limitation.

I had to switch to Safari because DuckDuckGo didn't show all the veterinarians in my city.

2

Compatibility Issues

Users have experienced compatibility problems with certain apps and devices, such as the inability to add appointments to iPhone calendars or use the app on older operating systems. This issue affects about 5% of users.

I can't add appointments to my iPhone calendar unless I switch to Safari.

3

Tab Management Frustrations

The browser's tab management system is causing confusion, as new tabs sometimes replace existing ones, and users are automatically switched to new tabs. This affects around 7% of users.

New tabs sometimes overtake existing ones, which is annoying and unproductive.

4

Perceived Privacy Breaches

A small percentage of users, around 3%, feel that their privacy is compromised, as they receive spam emails related to their private searches, questioning the app's privacy claims.

I get spam emails about products I searched for in private mode, which is frustrating.

Major Highlights of the Week

Search Limitations
The search engine omits many safe and relevant sites, forcing users to switch to other browsers for comprehensive results. This limitation undermines the core value proposition of privacy without compromising search quality.
I was looking up veterinarians in my city, and many were omitted, including the one I was specifically looking for.
Tab Management Issues
The browser's tab management is problematic, with new tabs sometimes overtaking existing ones and a lack of options to stay on the current page when opening links. This disrupts user workflow and reduces productivity.
When you open new tabs, sometimes they overtake another tab you already had opened, which is incredibly annoying.
Compatibility Problems
The app does not function on older operating systems, leaving users unable to use the browser on devices that cannot be upgraded. This limits the app's accessibility and user base.
No longer works on iPad without current iOS; it used to be fine, but now it just hangs.
Redirect and Pop-up Issues
Users experience frequent redirects and pop-ups, which are not site-specific but occur generally, leading to a frustrating browsing experience. This issue detracts from the app's promise of a seamless and secure browsing environment.
Recently more frequent site crashing and app crashing in general, also lots of redirects for some reason.
Privacy Concerns
Despite the app's privacy claims, users report receiving spam emails related to their private mode searches, raising concerns about data leakage. This issue challenges the app's credibility as a privacy-focused browser.
Feature Integration Gaps
The app lacks integration with native iOS features like calendar appointments, requiring users to switch to Safari for full functionality. This gap in feature integration diminishes the app's usability on iOS devices.
I am unable to add appointments to my iPhone calendar until I change default to Safari that does allow it.

Quotes of the week

Hear from some of the most impactful users to drive changes

I’m enjoying the DuckDuckGo browser overall; however, many safe sites are omitted. Example: I was looking up veterinarians in my city. Many were omitted including the one I was specifically looking for! In this instance, I switched over to Safari. But in this era of everyone snooping into your business, I prefer DuckDuckGo!

This is a great browser. Two things about tabs I’ve noticed that I hope are changed: when you open new tabs, sometimes they aren’t truly new tabs because they overtake another tab you already had opened. This is incredibly annoying to always have to check if I’m closing a freshly opened tab or a tab that opened over another one I had. I don’t understand this or the conditions it uses to determine a fresh tab or to overtake another tab.
